Radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound

Radiofrequency (RF) current can be converted into heat and used to destroy liver tumors by means of coagulation. This method of treatment is highly dependent on an accurate visualization of the liver lesions. RF ablation can be performed percutaneously, intraoperatively or laparoscopically, depending on the type and location of the tumor.

Ultrasound is needed as a guide to:

  • evaluate blood flow
  • biopsy suspicious areas
  • guide the tip of the ablation needle probe into the center of the tumor
  • monitor microbubble formation (to confirm the ablation process).
